Chapter 7: Expansion of Solids, Liquids and Gases – Sample Activity

Context

During a season of heavy rains, a river separating your village from the neighbourhood bursts its banks and the bridge across the river is swept away. The village members in your community mobilise themselves to replace the bridge using metallic beams, but an argument develops about the type of metal to be used and how to place them.
Support Material

Task
As a Physics learner, make a presentation to advise the village members on how to fix the problem.

Chapter Summary
In this chapter, you have learnt that:
When a substance absorbs or loses heat energy, the movement of its particles is affected, which causes its volume to change. Solids, liquids and gases all expand when heated, due to the increased movement of their particles.
Temperature changes affect the volume of gases the most and the volume of solids the least.
