Topic 9: Data Collection and Presentation – Sample Activity

Josephine operates a business. She needs to establish which day of the week is suitable for a holiday. She has asked you to analyse which day of the week has least customers so that it is taken as the holiday. Visit a nearby shop or market, identify any one item and find the number of buyers for the last 7 days, Record the number of buyers per day.

Task: 1. Make a tally chart for that week. 2. Represent the information on;

a) Bar chart. b) Pie chart. c) Line graph.

3. Which day is suitable for a holiday? Give a reason.

Remember

Qualitative data describes things that cannot be measured; for example, language, colour, favourite movie, favourite phone and many others. Quantitative data is about numbers. Quantitative data can be discrete or continuous. Discrete data only takes specific whole numbers; for example, number of babies, number of bicycles, number of books, number of cars. Continuous data can take on any value, including decimals; for example, height, distance, weight, speed, and temperature. A pie chart is also called the circle graph. The fraction parts in a pie chart add up to 1. Percentages in a pie chart add up to 100%. Degrees in a pie chart add up to 360°.
