This course has been developed to guide you in the revised lower secondary school curriculum in Uganda.

The course has been written in a way that will equip you with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to cope with this dynamic world.

At each of the learning stages, the course focuses on what you know and can do hence reducing content overload and dependency on the teacher as a source of knowledge.

This course has activities for you to do and information to read. This will stimulate you to think and discover things for yourself as well as enhance teamwork.

The course has suggested learning activities and sources of information to include library and internet research, use of newspapers, magazines and fieldwork, among others. All these will encourage learning by discovery.

    • CLIMATE CHANGE IN EAST AFRICA AND THE WORLD Details 1 year
    • After studying this unit, you will be able to: (a) Understand the concept of climate change and its indicators and draw diagrams to show the causes of climate change. (b) understand the possible causes of climate change and how climate change may affect Uganda and the rest of East Africa. (c) understand the difficulties faced in addressing climate change and its effects. (d) understand possible ways in which local communities and government can reduce the effects of climate change in other areas of Africa and the world. (e) form opinions about measures to reduce or mitigate climate change. (f) participate in tree planting and other activities which might alleviate the effects of climate change in their own communities / school. (g) appreciate the need for people and government to take actions to reduce the effects of climate change.

    •  MAJOR CLIMATIC ZONES OF THE WORLD Details 1 year
    • After studying this unit, you will be able to: (a) Know the names of some of the major climatic regions of the world (b) understand the main characteristics of the climates, factors affecting these climates, factors affecting these characteristics and how each type of climate affects the vegetation of the area  (c) understand how people's ways of life are influenced by the climate in each region  (d) plot the major climatic regions on a world map  (e)  recognize each type of region on photographs (f)  appreciate that people's lifestyles are influenced by the type of weather and climate (g)  appreciate that this influence is becoming less as technology helps people to overcome difficulties of their climate and as people move into urban areas.
    • Unit 2 Sample Activity of Integration 2, 00:00
    • MINING IN EAST AFRICA Details 1 year
    • After studying this unit, you will be able to:  (a)  understand what a mineral is and why some minerals are valuable (b) locate the main mining centres on the map of East Africa. (c)  know the main minerals occurring in East Africa and their amounts (d) understand the use of mineral resources in the development of any two industries in Uganda (e) understand the methods of mining used for different minerals and their problems. (f) draw flow diagrams to show the main stages and methods of mining. (g) recognize types and consequences of mining on photographs. (h) understand the effects of mining on the environment. (I) appreciate the positive and negative contribution of mineral resources to development (j) appreciate that the benefits of mining often go mainly to overseas companies or a local elite only (k) understand the physical and economic problems facing mining. (l) appreciate the need for strict laws to control mining physically and economically

    • DEVELOPMENT OF MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES IN EAST AFRICA Details 1 year
    • After studying this unit, you will be able to: (a)understand what manufacturing industries are (b) know some types of manufacturing industries in East Africa and their locations. (C) use fieldwork to study a local factory and its effects on the environment. (d) understand the factors influencing the distribution and development of any three manufacturing industries  (e) appreciate the contribution of manufacturing industries in transforming primary products. (f) appreciate the importance of developing industries to process raw materials exported from East Africa .  (g) Understand the effects of manufacturing industries on the environment.
    • Unit 4 Sample Activity of Integration 10, 00:00
    • SUSTAINABLE USE OF FISHERIES RESOURCES IN EAST AFRICA Details 1 year
    • After studying this unit, you will be able to: (a) know the major fishing areas in East Africa, inland and on the sea. (b) understand the main methods of fishing and draw diagrams to illustrate these methods. (c) understand the factors that favour fishing in East Africa.  (d) understand the differences between traditional and modern fishing methods and factors affecting the choice of these methods. (e) Understand the characteristics, trends, benefits and problems of fishing in a local area. (f) understand the dangers of over - fishing and how this can be prevented (g) understand the factors that cause damage of fishing grounds including pollution and how this can be prevented (h) know some methods of preserving fish (I) understand the methods of farming fish and how they help in conserving fish stocks.  (J) understand the marketing of fish. (k) understand the methods of conserving fishing grounds (l) use statistics, graphs and charts to analyses trends of fish stocks and fish catches. (m) appreciate the dangers facing fishing in East Africa, including overfishing, poor methods and pollution, and the need for strict laws and enforcement to preserve fish stocks.

    • WILDLIFE CONSERVATION AND TOURISM IN EAST AFRICA Details 1 year
    • After studying this unit, you will be able to:  (a) know the meaning of wildlife, national park, game / wildlife reserves, sanctuaries, historic and prehistoric sites. (b) understand the factors that influence the development of tourism in Uganda and the rest of East Africa (c) understand that tourism is an important form of trade, the benefits of tourism and its possible benefits to young people. (d) understand who a tourist is, why they come, and the facilities tourists need. (e) know the main tourist attractions of East Africa and locations of the main tourist area. use fieldwork to study a tourist attraction or potential tourist attraction in the local area. (g) guide visitors and tourists around attractions in the local area or any other area (i) know where most tourists to East Africa come from and reasons for this (j) Understand why we should preserve wildlife and the challenges facing wildlife in East Africa (k) appreciate that tourism can have both benefits and problems. (l) understand the challenges facing tourism in East Africa and the problems which can be brought by tourism. (m) appreciate the need for conserving wildlife. (n) appreciate the need for ensuring political stability and security it we are able to develop tourism (o) appreciate that caring for and preserving resources in the local community are signs of love for one's country. (p) understand the meaning of domestic tourism. (q) use simple graphs, charts and flow diagrams to represent statistics about tourism (r)  understand that in attracting tourists, we are always competing with other countries.

    • POPULATION AND URBANIZATION IN EAST AFRICA Details 1 year
    • After studying this chapter, you will be able to: (a) understand the concepts related to population. (b) understand the demographic transition model and how this relates to the historical growth and population structures of East Africa. (C) use maps, statistics, graphs and diagrams to analyse population (d) know the main areas of low and high density of population and the location of the main urban centers of East Africa. (e) understand the relationship between populations; resources and the provision of services understand the factors which have led to rapid population increase in Uganda and the rest of East Africa. (g) understand the relationship between a rapidly growing population and urbanization. (h) understand the concept of urbanization, the factors influencing urbanization and functions of urban areas. (i) appreciate the implications of urbanization for development (j) use statistics and photographs to illustrate urbanization and its problems (k) understand the methods which can be used to control the rate of population growth. (l) appreciate the need for and use of population control methods (m) appreciate the implication of urbanization for development. (n) understand Kampala city as an example of rapid urbanization and the advantages, disadvantages and problems resulting from urbanization (o)Appreciate the social and cultural problems of slowing down population growth.

    • TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATION IN EAST AFRICA Details 1 year
    • After studying this chapter, you will be able to: a) know the difference between transport and communication b) use photographs to identify the different types/modes of transport (c) use maps to show the major transport routes in East Africa  (d) understand the factors which influence the distribution of the major transport routes in Uganda and the rest of East Africa. (e) understand the role of the different types of transport in development f) understand the advantages and disadvantages of each form of communication (g) understand the consequences of the revolution in communication caused by digital communication mobile phones, computers, internet and social media. (h) appreciate the importance of transport in national and regional development.
