  1. WHAT ARE THESE SHORT COURSES AND WHO ARE THEY INTENDED FOR.

These short courses are courses carefully curated and designed by Makerere University Department of Journalism in partnership with Ultimate Multimedia Consult. There are four main courses (below) for three months each and over 16 skills specific courses.

 The Multimedia Journalism and Production Course offers practical digital and multimedia skills to working journalists, media professionals, journalism trainers and students as well as ongoing support to think, prepare and produce innovate multimedia content, products and platforms. The training is meant to empower a generation of digital media storytellers with the skills, knowledge and strategic implementation and production of digital media content for web and mobile access.

The Digital Pedagogy Skills Course is offering practical digital skills to teachers, lecturers, teaching professionals and trainers of trainees in facilitating digital learning. This course will help teachers and all educators in the purposeful application of new technologies to enhance teaching and learning using ICTs. It will help transform how teachers approach and think about teaching using available ICT for education tools in order to amplify learning and develop their own digital learning materials, improve their content access & interactivity.

The Digital Communication and Engagement  Course offers practical digital & multimedia communication skills to communication officers, spokespersons, public relations practitioners, communications professionals and trainers; and all those who seek to achieve public appreciation and influence with their messaging across digital media platforms. 

The Media and Information Literacy introduces the learners to basic understanding of media and information as channels of communication and tools for the development of individuals and societies. It also aims to develop students to be creative and critical thinkers as well as responsible users and competent producers of media and information.

All these courses are taught in a period of 3 months. (1 month of intensive training and 2 months of ongoing support as learners implement learned skills and do project.)

These are are one month specific skill courses available to study as listed below

The Digital Security Essentials course will teach you how to guard against the most common digital threats and demonstrate your commitment to cyber security. You will also learn valuable security principals and how to develop compliant policies.

The Blogging, Writing for Online and Search Engine Optimization course will help you learn how to create effective content for online, on blogs, websites and package your content well so people can find out about you, your brand and your products.

New Media analytics, research and measurement course helps you to get, interpret and analyse online metrics and insights so you can improve your communication results. Analytics can also help you to turn visitors into consumers and also to design target based campaigns for your audience.

Live streaming and Live reporting course is to help you produce high quality LIVE streaming from conferences, online shows, sports and other events. Learners will also be taught on how to integrate LIVE streaming with LIVE reporting and how to integrate it in your overall communication and publishing strategy.

Website Design, CMS & Server management course will help you to understand the basics of website design and then delve into choosing a content management system (CMS). We concentrate on WordPress which powers millions of blogs and websites. Learn how to create your own with this powerful publishing platform.

Social Media Essentials and Digital Marketing course. You will learn how to maximize your online presence and extend that all-important reach; discover how to harness the potential of Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and LinkedIn for engagement, lead generation and brand awareness; understand the value of content marketing, and how to create compelling copy and images to boost your visibility and credibility; then demonstrate the effectiveness of your digital campaigns through measurement and reportage.

Digital photography, imaging and graphics course will help students to develop key technical on-the-job skills valued by employers as well access personal and professional development opportunities. This course will give you the latest technical skills, insider advice and the chance to create great images for digital communication. Everything you need to stand out from the smartphone-at-gigs crowd.

Knowledge Capture and Knowledge Management course makes it possible to capture, store, share and utilize the knowledge and experience of an organization or individuals. This includes capturing tacit knowledge that resides in people’s heads, and packaging it for sharing. Learn about the different types of knowledge and how knowledge management is implemented to provide evidence for improvement. This course will help create a learning organization that improves based on learned experiences.

Participatory Journalism, Crowdsourcing tools and practices course looks at the benefits, risks and tools used in crowd sourced journalism and promoting participatory journalism. At the end of the course participants will set up initiatives towards engaging citizens in reporting and production of news and information

Effective Documentation course will help participants to acquire skills and knowledge which will help them identify best practice, to identify and describe the lessons learned, most significant changes, case stories and document key achievements to influence policy and replication.

Digital Video production and storytelling course will  serve as a foundation for further exploration in digital video artwork and storytelling. Students will write, direct, act, shoot, and edit short videos, with beginning and intermediate instruction. We will cover the fundamentals of shooting, sound, lighting, and editing, among other production issues. Students will form production teams and put these techniques into practice.

Digital audio production and podcasting course will help you develop skills to record, mix and master audio using available audio production equipment and software. You will learn to apply technical skills and creativity to design sound for stories, film, TV and video games using standard different software.

Data Visualization course will provide you with an informative introduction to the methods, tools and processes involved in visualizing big data. It is focused on communicating complex information with visually appealing charts, graphs and maps. Participants will learn to create clear and meaningful visualizations using publicly available data, tell stories with interactive maps, and create beautiful and effective graphs and charts.

New media revenue models and entrepreneurship course is designed for those who are, or those who want to be, actively starting a new venture involving digital media technologies. The course is not a technology course but is an entrepreneurial strategy course that deals extensively with the particular dynamics of new industries such as those characterized by digital media.

Immersive Storytelling course gives students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a story that they can then take to their readers, watchers, and users. Students will do this through 360 video, advanced video and photo production, audio stories, integrated social media and the written word.
