This Unit is about fractures and other bone disorders.

Fracture

A fracture is a broken or cracked bone in the body.

Types of fractures

  1. Simple fracture (closed fracture).
  2. Compound fracture (open fracture).
  3. Green stick fracture.
  4. Comminuted fracture.

Simple fracture (closed fracture)

It is when the broken bone remains inside the skin.

Signs of a simple fracture

  1. The broken bone remains inside the skin.
  2. Swelling of the injured part.

Symptoms of a simple fracture

  1. Pain while moving.
  2. Failure to walk or move the affected limb.

Compound fracture (Open fracture)

It is when the broken bone comes out of the skin.

Signs of a compound fracture

  • The broken bone comes out of the skin.
  • Bleeding of the wound.
  • Swelling of the limb.
  • Damaged tissues around the injured part.

Symptoms of compound fracture

  1. Pain around the injured part.
  2. Failure to walk or move the limb.

First aid of simple and compound fracture

  1. Tie splints around the injured part.
  2. Take the casualty to the nearest health centre.

N.B.    Splints keep the broken bones in one position and prevent further injuries.

Green stick fractures

  1. It is when a bone bends or gets a crack in children.

Comminuted fracture

This is when the bone breaks into many pieces.

Burns

A burn is an injury on the body caused by dry heat.

Examples of dry heat

  1. Hot metals.
  2. A hot piece of charcoal.
  3. A fire flame.

First aid for burns

  1. Put the burn in clean cold water
  2. Pour clean cold water on the injured part

Scalds

A scald is an injury to the body caused by wet heat

Examples of wet heat

  1. Hot porridge
  2. Hot milk
  3. Hot water
  4. Steam

Bruises

A bruise is an injury on the skin which leads to the bleeding of blood cells/capillaries below the skin.

Minor cuts 

  1. Wash the cut with clean water and soap.
  2. Apply a plaster

Sprains

  1. The tearing of a ligament in the body.
  2. It is the over stretching of ligaments

Sign of a sprain

  1. Swelling of the injured part.

Symptom of sprains

  1. Pain while walking.

First aid of sprains

  1. Wrap a piece of ice around the injured part
  2. Tie the injured part with a firm bandage

Strains

It is the overstretching of a muscle or tearing of a muscle or a tendon.

First aid of strains

  • Wrap a piece of ice around the injured part.
  • Tie the injured part with a firm bandage
  • Rub the injured part with liniment.
