THE PERMISSIVE SOCIETY

A permissive society is a kind of society in which individuals behave as they please no matter whether it affects others. In other wards it is a society which is based on pleasure principle. Here people would get orders disregard of the cultural values, rules and regulations. Such a society is highly immoral and allows all aspects to operate whether desirable/undesirable.

This society is rapidly up reading because of modernization, westernization, influence mass media, employment changing patterns etc.

Uganda is example of permissive society since new evils and aspects are coming up and were un expected in the past.

INDICATORS OF MANIFESTING OF PERMISSIVENESS

In Uganda, there are many indicators of permissiveness and can be analyzed as below;

Sexual immorality is one of the indicators of permissiveness in a society today i.e. there is a lot of sex abuse e.g. rape, fornication, homosexuality, lesbianism etc.

Use of drugs especially by young people e.g. marijuana, Opium, Cocaine, Viagra etc.

Too much gambling such as scratching for cash, rotary competition playing cards for money, organizers draws by business companies.

Increasing cases of abortion in higher institutions of learning and in secondary schools

Illegal marriages are on a high use i.e. girls running away with their lovers (elopement) trial marriage and many having concubines.

Application of artificial beauty and cosmetics e.g. bleaching skin, lipstick, eye and nose pins, artificial tattoos e.g. chairs etc.

Misuse of language i.e. altered accents and vulgar language like Fuck up, fuck off etc.

Corruption in the society such as taking bribe, asking for favors and sex for jobs.

Too much pornography e.g. in form of magazines, films, literature etc.

High crime rate such as stealing, pick pocketing etc.

Rebellion of children against their parents, teachers, others like elders is also a sign of permissiveness in a society. This is further seen in strikes.

Violence/disrespect before the law also shows permissiveness in a society. People today violate laws governing the society internationally e.g. people smoking in public, having sex in school etc., indecent dressing is also a manifestation of permissiveness in a society i.e. miniskirts, See e through, tight jeans among others.

In religion where people use their own religion to indoctrine others

Mash rooming bars and drinking joints and night clubs are also examples of a permissive society.

CAUSES OF A PERMISSIVE SOCIETY

• Moral and religious convictions because religion is a private affair and individual feels. It’s right to consult his own God without necessarily consulting a society premarital sex etc.
• The influence of mass media and pornography has led to a permissive society. Today people are much interested in pornographic films, literature which things have led to the decline in morals i.e. they tend to influence people’s feelings and behaviors.
• Wealth people have developed financially, materialistically, powerful causing the class of the rich and the poor consequently. It has in hand brought such people to think in the same way because the rich are capable of doing what they want.
• Nature of the modern family because of urbanization of the type of work, family members are separated for a long time hence do not meet in morals and behavior of the society which are usually taught in the family.
• The generation gap has also caused permissiveness in the society. The young ones fail to understand the elders in other wards the young generation conflicts with the old generation because the young ones undermine the tradition values and level them as old fashioned.
• Nature of a society because of the different needs in different age groups, different sex and status, circumstances surrounding same societies has led to permissiveness in the societies.
• Liberalization of contraception’s such as pills and condoms has led to permissiveness in the society people engage in prostitution, adultery because they can’t get pregnant or contract STDs.
• Education, some controversial /discipline like philosophy influence people. In many ways of life. Therefore many people end up devoting the purpose of life. It also creates class the elites who think they know more disregarding other peoples feeling.
• Technology and science, this has shown that there is no physical and heat hence dotting God’s existence and rebellion against religion in turn.
• Deculturalisation or breakdown of orders of traditional values. The traditional values are now considered outdated. Sex education has declined hence leading to lack of proper guidance and counseling in turn has led to permissiveness.
• Some people have not been exemplary, they engage in prostitution, alcoholism and other evils when their children and seeing. The children after seeing, they fell in the footsteps of their parents thus using permissiveness.
• Western influence generally the mixture of different tradition of the whites and blacks and rapid growing of modern world and the need to develop has made people to turn away from the expected behaviors in the struggle to survive.
• Poverty and unemployment has promoted permissiveness, people today engage in crimes for survival. They murder, forge paper such that they can get what to eat.
• The misinterpretation of human rights and children’s right has led to permissiveness in the society e.g. children misbehave because they know nobody would touch them.
• Lack of proper legislation on some crimes like prostitution has led to permissiveness in the society. Prostitutes are arrested and released the next day because there is no law banning their activities.
• Natural attraction of people because they are born with different sexes which were their property created to attract each other. People in their search for mutual love may end up doing what is not intended to be done.
• Law enforcement officers are weak/corrupt thus cannot properly enforce laws and the culprits walk away hand free.
• Too much rigidity of some laws because these people are not happy especially. Laws find alternative ways of breaking them thus permissiveness in the society.
